The Cleaning

A dental cleaning is performed by one of our highly skilled and gentle hygienists. You may wonder why this is necessary if you practice good oral hygiene at home. Well, even if you brush twice daily and floss every day like we advise, there are parts of your mouth that are difficult or impossible to reach at home. Using a powerful ultrasonic scaler, we will remove plaque and hardened tartar from your teeth and from underneath the gumline. After your teeth have been meticulously cleaned, we will floss and polish them using a special toothpaste. Your pristine pearly whites will gleam!

The Examination

Once your teeth have been cleaned, Dr. Callow will thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, and mouth. He will look for indications of decay and gum disease, as well as other issues like oral cancer and the telltale signs of teeth grinding. We have a cutting-edge DIAGNOdent tool, which noninvasively finds even the smallest cavities using laser fluorescence. Our intraoral camera allows us to see inside your mouth with precise detail and share the images with you.

Digital X-Rays

X-rays are an important tool for any dentist. They enable us to catch problems that are underneath the surface and not visible during the visual examination. These issues include decay between the teeth, tumors and cysts, abscesses, impacted teeth, and jawbone damage or deterioration.

Conventional X-rays, which some practices still use, are uncomfortable, take a long time to develop, and require relatively high amounts of radiation. At Douglas A. Callow, D.D.S., we use modern digital X-ray technology, which has a host of benefits over the old style. Digital X-rays are more comfortable, they are “developed” almost immediately, and they expose you, the patient, to just a tiny amount of radiation. The pictures show up on our computer screen, and we are able to enlarge and manipulate them in a way that’s just not possible with film.

We also offer optional preventive services like fluoride treatments and sealants. To learn more and to book a dental checkup at Douglas A. Callow, D.D.S., call our Plymouth, MI office at 734-404-7336. Alternatively, you may get in touch online.
