What’s A Dental Emergency?

Any injury that causes tooth loss is a genuine emergency. If a tooth is knocked out due to impact, it can often be re-rooted if it’s attended to quick enough. This is one situation where time can equal teeth – the longer you wait, the less likely that you’ll save the tooth.

A tooth that falls out for no apparent reason is usually a sign of a severe infection. The same holds true for severe, unexplained pain in a tooth or your jaw. Teeth aren’t supposed to hurt, so when there’s great pain, it signals that something is really wrong. In any event, you should treat tooth loss and dental pain as emergencies.

If you discover that you’re bleeding freely inside your mouth, it might be due to a broken tooth or a broken restoration like a filing or a dental crown. If you can stop the bleeding yourself, that’s best. When you can’t stop the bleeding in a reasonable amount of time, you should visit your local emergency room. Dr. Callow can advise you on the best course of action.

Speaking of broken teeth, any break in your tooth enamel exposes you to disease-causing bacteria. If the nerve is exposed, that’s going to get very painful very fast. Don’t put off having a broken tooth treated promptly; the fact that the tooth broke may indicate a more serious problem. Just like teeth aren’t supposed to hurt, they’re not supposed to break.

Severe pain in your jaw is another sign that something may be seriously wrong. Don’t write it off as a fluke or a one-time thing.

The only way to know if something is wrong is to have Dr. Callow perform a thorough examination.
