What’s Wrong With My Jaw?

TMJ Treatment 3 at Douglas A. Callow, DDS Office in Plymouth, MI

The joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull is known as the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ for short. It’s an amazing complex joint that allows your jaw to move freely in all directions – as long as everything is working right. If you’re experiencing jaw pain or other “mystery” symptoms, you might be suffering from temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Fortunately, Plymouth, MI dentist Douglas Callow provides effective and affordable TMD solutions.

What Goes Wrong

Your TMJs (you have one on each side) work well as long as all the parts and pieces can slide smoothly past one another. When something gets in the way of those smooth movements, problems arise.

What kinds of problems? TMD symptoms include:

  • Popping or cracking when moving the jaw
  • The jaw locking in position, open and/or closed
  • Pain while moving the jaw
  • Difficulty chewing that’s not due to a tooth problem
  • Headaches
  • Pain that radiates to your face and/or neck
  • Ear pain and/or pressure, tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Neck or shoulder pain
  • Dizziness

Problems with your TMJ can be caused by an autoimmune disorder like rheumatoid arthritis that attacks the joint. You might also have suffered an impact to the jaw or the joint or experienced a whiplash injury. There’s some evidence that holding your head in one position – like cradling a phone on your neck or a violin under your chin – can contribute. Chronic gum chewing can cause wear and tear on the joint. And chronic teeth grinding can also cause some of the symptoms listed above, as well as wearing down your tooth enamel.

The bottom line is that the exact cause may be hard to pin down, but there is effective treatment for most TMD problems.

Enter The Mouthguard

Custom mouthguards can provide significant relief from TMD problems and tooth grinding. You could buy a mouthguard over the counter or online, but it wouldn’t be customized for your needs and problems.

When you schedule a consultation with Callow Family Dentistry in Plymouth, MI, Dr. Callow will take a thorough history and perform a comprehensive examination. Based on his findings, he may recommend a custom mouthguard to alleviate your symptoms and provide relief. There are variety of options in mouthguards and Dr. Callow will determine which type will work best for you.

Our custom mouthguards are based on the careful impressions and other measurements we take of your mouth. Those impressions and measurements are sent to an offsite lab to guide the creation of your mouthguard. Once it arrives, we’ll carefully make adjustments as needed to ensure that it fits perfectly and will function well for you.
